Request Migration

Sakai Project Sites must meet the eligibility requirements to migrate to OWL Brightspace.

Sakai Project Sites that are not eligible to migrate to OWL Brightspace can transition to another solution or be deleted by the site maintainer. Several alternate solutions are centrally supported by WTS. For more information, visit the Transition Information page.

Step 1 – Claim your project sites

If your project site is used for supplementary academic materials or training, you can select “Request Migration to OWL Brightspace” as the action in the Sakai Transition app when you claim your site. Note that only one site maintainer can claim each project site. If you have multiple versions of the same project site, request migration for only one and delete unneeded versions.

Step 2 – Access your Jira request

If you have never accessed Western's Jira Service Desk before, please login to activate your Jira account. Your migration request cannot be processed unless you have activated your Jira account.

After you’ve claimed your project site(s), any that you have selected the action “Request Migration to OWL Brightspace” will be submitted to Jira as a Service Desk ticket. It can take up to one week for your request to be forwarded to Jira. You will be notified when your ticket has been created.

In the Jira ticket, you must provide additional information on your project site for it to be assessed, including:

  • The name of your course.
  • The department that owns the course.
  • The start date for the course.
  • Whether you want Assisted or Self-Migration.

Step 3 – Assessment result

Each migration request will take approximately 3 weeks to complete after all information has been submitted by the requestor in the Jira ticket form.

If approved, your new Supplementary Course in OWL Brightspace will be created according to the details you provided.

If declined, your project site will not be eligibile to migrate to OWL Brightspace. Instead, you must transition to an alternative solution. For more information about this process, visit the Transition Information page.

Migration Options

When you request migration, you have two options:

  • Assisted Migration: Have the migration team migrate your course content for you.
  • Self-Migration/Build New: Migrate your course content yourself, or start from scratch.

With either choice, a new Supplementary Course will be created for you in OWL Brightspace.

The table below can provide additional guidance on which option might be best for you.
