Getting Started with Your Course

My Reference Course is Ready...Now What?

You'll be notified by email when your reference course is ready. If you requested "assisted migration", your course content will be in the reference course. If you requested "self-migration" or if you're planning to build new, you'll receive a blank reference course.

Once you have access to your reference course, it's time to begin building and reviewing content! IMPORTANT: Neither option provides you with your course in a ready-to-teach state. You MUST review the content to ensure it is ready for students.

Guides for Preparing Your Reference Course for Teaching

Check out the handy guides for ensuring your course has had a successful journey from OWL Sakai to OWL Brightspace! Use the document to check that your content has migrated over as expected. It also identifies some changes that can’t be made as part of the migration process. This is a necessary step of the course migration process!

Prepare Your Self-Migrated or New Reference Course for Teaching

  • If you have had Quizzes and Question Pools migrated, please review the following:
    • Verify that questions are not missing images or attachments
    • Check for broken links in questions
    • Verify that question weights are still correct
    • Look for unsupported question types and convert as necessary

How do I copy content from my Reference Course to my Official Course once I have finished preparing it?

Once your reference course is ready, you must copy the course content to the official course, where your students will be enrolled. Learn how to do that on OWL Brightspace Help!

Training and Support

If you haven’t yet requested your personal OWL Brightspace sandbox and explored the Self-Guided Instructor Training, we strongly suggest you do this before making any changes to your reference course or building in a new reference course. There are also workshops and drop-in Q&A sessions available to support you as you prepare your course content!
